ECD-The Promise of Endless Opportunities

This online course developed by Pakistan Alliance for Early Childhood (PAFEC), intends to introduce a course for students, teachers, parents, aspirants, caregivers, researchers, and entrepreneurs, to develop foundational understanding of Early Childhood Development, and Early Childhood Care and Education, focusing on the child’s development, learning, and care from zero to twelve years of age.

The course encompasses early development, learning and care with a particular focus on discovering connections between theory, research, policy, and professional practice. The course aims to provide a clear understanding of the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning, optimal development, and wellbeing.

The certificate course is designed to provide students a foundational qualification to become a specialized ECD/ECCE teacher, child care practitioner, advocate, entrepreneur, researcher, and a well-informed parent. The course will familiarize participants with the National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) up to Grade 5, global best practices, Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on Goal 4.2, Nurturing Care Framework, UN Conventions on the Rights of the Children (with a focus on the four principles, i.e., best interest of a child, non-discrimination, survival and development, and participation) and health, nutrition standards for children between the ages of zero to twelve.

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand Holistic Childhood Development from age 0 to 12, with a focus on the sensitive phases of child development and foundational learning
  • Explore the Nurturing Care Framework, developmental domains, learning theories, philosophies, and age-appropriate milestones
  • Comprehend and apply the National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) up to Grade 5. Explore innovative teaching methods for English, Science and Mathematics up to Grade 5
  • Gain hands-on experience in creating positive and engaging learning conditions at home through positive parenting and responsive caregiving
  • Develop practical skills in play-based learning and child-led play, using low-cost and no-cost materials to foster sustainable learning
  • Promote inclusive education by addressing diverse learning needs and supporting all children’s development—social-emotional, physical, cognitive, language, literacy, and numeracy—through responsive facilitation and teaching
